I want to start by saying that I recieved this router for free as part of netgears friends and family program. With the new BETA firmware I am testing, most of the issues seem to have been ironed out. Although initially it did connect rigidly with older firm wares, it is now more flexible in shuffling the equipment from one 5 Ghz band to the other 5 Ghz Band.Īlthough there were initial hick ups and lots of frustrations, the matter was finally escalated to the R&D team in Taiwan who seem to have delivered solution with new BETA firmware which is working great so far. With this new BETA firmware I am testing now, it works seamlessly in load balancing. The SMART Connect feature is another feather in cap.

The results again are super fast read and write speeds for my wireless desk top as well as lap tops especially during the data back ups.I have observed Link Rates in excess of 700 Mbps on the iPad Air, iPhone 6S and iPhone 6 Plus.

I have connect QNAP TS-253 Pro directly to R8500 using Port Aggregation. The combination of R8500 along with EX7000 delivers deadly wireless link rates in excess of 900 Mbps even with several walls between them. I have also coupled this R8500 with Netgear EX7000 as I wanted to keep my other hard wired equipments like Seagate NAS's etc in the remote corner in order to avoid equipment cluster in the living room where the R8500 currently reside. The DDNS and VPN functionality are very handy to securely access the router from outside the network.

The six LAN ports are extremely handy and the port aggregation delivers AWESOME speeds. This R8500 Netgear X8 AC5300 is a SUPER DUPER router with loads of functionalities to offer. A cooling fan would have been a good addition as it gets a little warm. This Netgear X8 AC-5300 seriously needs firmware upgrade. DDNS & VPN, Port Aggregation, Although the initial serious issues I had were beyond the capability of the phone tech support, they were finally escalated to R&D Team in who seem to have come out with lots of goodies in the new BETA Firmware which I am currently testing.Ĭons: LARGE FOOT PRINT.almost as big as 12 inch laptop. But keep in mind the extreme limitation on range before diving in and spending $450 on a router that needs to be very close to devices. This review is for: NETGEAR Nighthawk X8 - AC5300 Tri-Band Quad-Stream Gigabit Wi-Fi Router (R8500) If you want to be ready for the next wave of technology you may want to consider picking up a router with the 60GHz frequency. This router is more than enough if you have mediocre to above average needs and arguably enough for any single home application for the near future. This router has other features I have yet to dive into but I will mention 2 Ethernet ports that are given priority when bandwidth is needed for high demand gaming.

I have two laptops, one desktop and 4 tv connected as well as several home automation devices ( video doorbell, cameras, sprinkler system, lights, blinds and vacuum) plus standard phone usage on wifi. There are plenty of Ethernet ports for most applications as well as usb 3.0. I have really enjoyed the router so far, I have it paired with a surfboard 6190 modem with 150 connection from xfinity. I have had no issue connecting anywhere in my home on the 5GHz (single story 190 0sq/ft) The x8 has one 2.4GHz and two 5GHz bands so there is plenty of devices that are able to connect at higher speeds and the 2.4GHz gives great range. Not to mention the 60GHz needs to be very close to the devices connecting to it, 10 feet away and a wall are enough to drop the connection. There will be plenty soon but in my near future I don't plan to invest in devices that can operate this frequency. One is bank for my buck, the new x10 and d-link have a 60GHz band but most devices can't use this band yet. And I went with the x8 instead of the hot new x10 for a few reasons. I am a big fan of netgear and decided to stick with them even though there are other tempting options from asus and d-link at the moment.
